Opticianry
Put your future in focus with a career as an optician.
The field of opticianry is an area of vision care which deals with the improvement of human sight. Opticians interpret eye prescriptions, design eyewear and contact lenses, fit eyewear and contact lenses, make eyewear, and manage business operations. Eyewear fashion, style, color, and individual design make up an important part of the optician's day.
Seattle Central's School of Opticianry is the only program in the Northwest fully accredited by the Commission on Opticianry. Our grads have a 96 percent pass rate on the Washington State Dispensing Optician License Exam, compared with a 45 percent pass rate for apprentices.
In the seven-quarter program, you'll learn the technical skills necessary to do complex accurate lab work, and you'll take a variety of business courses that will prepare you to work with the public. You'll even get practical experience in the college's Campus Optical Shop. And starting salaries are good, ranging from $30,000-$38,000 a year. The current median expected salary for an experienced optician nationwide is $37,882 (salary.com).
New students are accepted into the program fall and winter quarters. Call the School of Opticianry at (206) 344-4321 for more information or visit the opticianry website.
