Program Overview

Certificate, 83.5 credits (24.5 in related instruction, 59 in major) ; optional AAS Degree

• Upon completion of the program, students will be eligible to take the National Certification Exam.
• Students can begin the Surgical Technology program in fall quarter only.
• Surgical Technology might be a good fit for you if you enjoy science and want to work in a hospital operating room. Surgical Technologists work under the direct supervision of a physician or registered nurse as part of a healthcare team.
• Areas of study include anatomy & physiology, medical terminology and surgical technology courses.
• Graduates work as surgical technologists in a hospital operating room and ambulatory surgical settings..
• All student activities associated with the curriculum, especially while students are completing his or her clinical rotations, will be educational in nature. Students will not be receiving any monetary remuneration during this educational experience, nor will he or she be substituted for hired staff personnel with the clinical institution, in the capacity of a surgical technologist.
• The student must meet the criteria for each classification of surgical cases mandated by the accrediting body of Seattle Central's Surgical Technology Program. Students enrolled in SURG 125 and SURG 135, Clinical Practice I and II will be required to have obtained a total of eighty (80) surgical cases. Of the minimum eighty (80) surgical case requirement; a minimum of twenty-five (25) surgical cases: ten (10) should be of a level I core, ten (10) should be of a level II core, and five (5) should be of a level I specialty. The rest of the surgical cases acquired will be distributed across core and specialty areas. This is the clinical case requirement for program completion and graduation.

The Surgical Technology Program is a full-time three-quarter program offering a certificate of completion as well as an Associate of Applied Science Degree option. This program prepares men and women to share in the responsibility of the operating room team in the care of the patient requiring surgery. The technologist is at all times under the supervision of the physician and/or registered nurse. The program consists of instruction in the basic sciences, medical terminology, surgical functions in the operating room, operating room equipment, central supply processing, and aseptic technique. The clinical practice throughout the program will be coordinated by the instructor at the college and take place in various hospitalsand ambulatory surgical settings throughout the greater Puget Sound metropolitan area. This program is nationally accredited by the Accreditation Review Council on Education in Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting (ARC/STSA) and the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). New students are accepted into the three-quarter program each fall.

Career Opportunities

A student completing this program will have the skills needed to work as a surgical technologist in a hospital operating room and ambulatory surgical settings and will be eligible to take the National Certification Exam.
