Communication with a Purpose

Sign language interpreters facilitate communication between people who are deaf or hard of hearing and people who can hear. Sign language interpreters must be fluent in English and in American Sign Language (ASL), which combines signing, finger spelling, and specific body language. A career as an interpreter might be right for you if you are a good communicator and enjoy working with people.

Seattle Central Community College has three distinct programs of study for those interested in working with deaf populations:

Deaf Studies A two-year program of intensive study in American Sign Language and Deaf culture.

Interpreter Training Prepares students to facilitate communication between deaf and hearing people using English and American Sign Language.

Deaf Interpreter Training Certificate Program Prepares individuals who are deaf to work as interpreters for the deaf population and the deaf/blind population.
