DIVISION Science and Mathematics CURRICULUM High School Completion TITLE Algebra II NUMBER MATH 085 TYPE Mathematics CREDITS Five LENGTH One quarter of five lecture hours per week. CLASS SIZE 35 PREREQUISITE MATH 084 with 2.0 or better, or placement exam.
COURSE DESCRIPTION:
A lecture/workshop course in elementary algebra.
COURSE PRESENTATION:
The course emphasizes understanding concepts rather than only memorizing rules. Students are often allowed to work in groups on problems that are designed to extend their understanding and provoke new questions. Students are encouraged to use calculators for routine calculations and for investigation of concepts. It is offered once a year in combination with Math 084 for students who have had some algebra in high school. These double classes meet for two class periods a day and allow more time to develop a supportive community of learners of mathematics. They're intended to encourage students who are from groups
under-represented in math and science.
COURSE OBJECTIVES:
To give students the opportunity to learn basic algebra skills needed for further work in math and science. To help students see the usefulness of algebra in solving problems.
COURSE CONTENT:
Exponents and scientific notation in writing very large and very small numbers.
Multiplying and factoring polynomials.
Irrational numbers and simplifying radical expressions.
Solving Quadratic Equations.
Graphing Quadratic Functions.
