Transfer Out Procedure Guide
ELIGIBILITY:
You must be in good status with immigration (have been enrolled full-time, made academic progress, and not
engaged in unauthorized employment).
If you are 'out-of-status', please consult the new school's Immigration Advisor regarding your options. We can only transfer your record out ONLY IF you choose to apply for reinstatement.
STEPS:
- Apply to a new school (submit application, financial documents, transcript, etc.) and get accepted!
- Bring the following document from the new school to us:
- Transfer/ Status Verification Form (if applicable)
- Submit:
- the SEVIS Release/Transfer Out Request Form *
- A copy of the Acceptance Letter *or admission confirmation.
* The school's name you indicate on this form MUST be the school that you
are "ACCEPTED" into and will
definitely attend.
- After you completed ALL these 3 steps above, your SEVIS record will be released to the new school. Then, an
advisor at your new school will issue your "Transfer Pending" I-20.
REMEMBER: your record will not be released unless we receive both a Transfer Out Request and an Acceptance Letter
(or official confirmation).
DOCUMENTS:
- AN ACCEPTANCE LETTER (from the new school):
states the admission acceptance as well as quarter/ semester of your admission to the new school.
- TRANSFER/ STATUS VERIFICATION FORM (from the new school):
International Student Advisor at the new school need to confirm your immigration status with us.
- SEVIS RELEASE/TRANSFER OUT REQUEST FORM (from /SCCC):
to inform us of your intention to transfer to other school and to officially request a SEVIS record "Release Date",
which is usually your last date of attendance at SCCC.
- NEW "TRANSFER PENDING" I-20 (from the new school):
will be issued by the new school once your SEVIS record is released upon your official request.
TIMELINE:
- To obtain new I-20:
- If you are completing your program of study, you have 60 days from the last day of attendance to
complete the steps above and obtain a new I-20. If you are NOT completing your program of study, you must
request a transfer BEFORE the first day of the following quarter at the new school.
- If you plan to travel back home in between transfer, you MUST reenter the U.S. with a new school's I-20.
You could request the new "Transfer-Pending" I-20 to be sent to your home address.
- If you will be outside of the U.S. more than 5 months, it is not necessary to request a transfer.
Please consult an advisor of the new school you are applying to regarding new "INITIAL" I-20.
*Note that you could no longer use SCCC's I-20 to re-enter the U.S. as it becomes invalid as of the last day
of your attendance.*
- To complete transfer process:
An International Student Advisor at the new school will complete transfer in status during the first 2 week of
your new program start date. A new I-20 (marked "Transfer Completed" on page 3) will be issued.
