Curricular Practical Training (CPT)

Curricular Practical Training (CPT) is a paid or unpaid formal practical training/ internship. It must be performed for credits that count toward completion of a degree or educational objective.

CPT, as a benefit to F-1 students who maintain good immigration status:

  • MUST qualify as an "integral part of the established curruculum". This means that the training or internship must be listed in the course catalog, and must satisfy a degree requirement.
  • MUST be recommended by the Academic Advisor and approved by the Immigration Advisor. Please note that not all college transfer majors are eligible for CPT quthorization.
  • MUST be arranged through Cooperative Education office or your department.
  • Can be PAID TIME (20 hours/week or less) while pursuing a full course load, or full time.

Keep in mind that students who engage in Full-Time CPT for one whole year lose their eligibility for Post Completion Optional Practical Training/OPT.

REMEMBER: International students must request authorization to participate in CPT BEFORE they enroll for the required intership credits.

CPT authorization is completed when the Immigration Advisor endorses page 3 of the I-20 form.
